Application of combined morphological, ecological and molecular approach in the classification of planktonic representatives of the genus Anabaena (Cyanobacteria)

The main goal of the project is to interconnect and discuss three approaches (morphological, ecological and molecular) applied in classification of cyanobacterial complex Anabaena. An innovation which is brought with the project is the main accent on morphology in natural conditions as well as the investigation on the relationships between morphology and various growth conditions. Completely new is the hypothesis on “switching” between coiled and straight forms of filaments both in cultures and in natural conditions, and the experiments directed on its testing. The aim of the project is to study high number of  strains from various localities and across the whole spectrum of Anabaena morphotypes (+ selected Aphanizomenon types). The point is to obtain representative results, related not only to single strains but also to the whole types (morphotypes) represented by the strains.
